How the time difference works across Canada

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year, with no daylight saving. Canada spans six time zones, so the gap depends on where your team sits: 9.5 hours ahead of Toronto in summer, 10.5 in winter, and up to 13.5 hours ahead of Vancouver. In every case your morning is my evening.

Your timeMy time (summer)My time (winter)
9:00 AM Atlantic (Halifax)5:30 PM6:30 PM
9:00 AM Eastern (Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal)6:30 PM7:30 PM
9:00 AM Central (Winnipeg, Regina*)7:30 PM8:30 PM
9:00 AM Mountain (Calgary, Edmonton)8:30 PM9:30 PM
9:00 AM Pacific (Vancouver, Victoria)9:30 PM10:30 PM

*Saskatchewan stays on Central Standard Time all year, so Regina is 8:30 PM IST in every season.

The rhythm is the same one I keep with US teams: your morning is open for standups, calls and pairing, and my full working day happens while you are offline. You start each day with a pull request or a TestFlight build waiting for review. Teams in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes get the widest live overlap; for teams in British Columbia we agree a fixed daily window.

Relevant work

OnTrack Core

Enterprise mobility app for infrastructure inspection, maintenance management and asset tracking. Offline-first with real-time synchronisation, built for field crews who lose signal for hours at a time, which is a familiar problem for teams operating across Canada.

AirWait

My own subscription product on the App Store. It pulls live security wait times for major airports, tracks flights with a live boarding countdown and works out a personalised leave-by time. Swift and SwiftUI, StoreKit 2 subscription, Firebase backend, run end to end by me.

How I built the wait time pipeline

About 70 percent of my clients are outside India, including teams in Canada, the US, the UK and Australia. The full set of projects, from emergency response apps to productivity tools, is on the portfolio.

Contracts, payment and paperwork

  • Contractor, not employee. You are engaging an independent business based in India for work performed in India. No Canadian payroll, CPP or EI on your side.
  • Tax. I do not charge GST or HST. Withholding rules for non-resident contractors apply to services performed in Canada, which mine are not. Please confirm your own position with your accountant.
  • Invoices in CAD or USD. Paid by bank transfer, PayPal or Payoneer. Milestone-based for fixed-scope projects, hourly or weekly for ongoing work.
  • NDA before we talk details. Send yours, or I can provide one.
  • You own the code. On final payment you receive full ownership of the source code and every project asset, and the GitHub repository is transferred to your organisation.

How we work day to day

  • Slack for daily communication, Zoom or Google Meet for calls, Jira or Linear for the board. I fit into what your team already uses.
  • Your repository, your branching model, your code review. Every change ships as a reviewable pull request.
  • Regular TestFlight builds so stakeholders can try the app on their own phones, not just watch a demo.
  • I can lead the iOS work end to end or support an in-house developer. Standups happen in your morning.

What I can build for you

Native iOS apps

iPhone and iPad apps in Swift and SwiftUI, built for performance and App Store review on the first attempt.

Subscriptions and payments

StoreKit 2 in-app purchases and subscriptions with server-side verification, shipped end to end.

Firebase and cloud backends

Auth, Firestore, Cloud Functions and push notifications designed alongside the app rather than bolted on.

Rescue and modernisation

Taking over an existing codebase, fixing performance and crashes, migrating UIKit to SwiftUI.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the time difference with Canada work?

India is 9.5 to 13.5 hours ahead of Canada depending on your province and the season, so your morning is my evening. I keep your morning open for standups, calls and pairing, and my full working day happens while you are offline, so you start each day with new work to review.

Do we need to withhold Canadian tax or set up payroll?

You are contracting a business based outside Canada for work performed outside Canada, so there is no Canadian payroll, CPP or EI on your side, and I do not charge GST or HST. Withholding rules for non-residents apply to services performed in Canada, which mine are not. Please confirm your own position with your accountant.

Can you join our existing Canadian engineering team?

Yes. I regularly work inside existing teams: your repository, your branching model, your code review process, your standups. I can lead the iOS work or support an in-house developer.

Who owns the code?

You do. On final payment you receive full ownership of the source code and all project assets, and the repository is transferred to your organisation.
